Data Governance is the set of activities aimed at managing people, processes, methodologies and information technologies in order to achieve a constant and correct treatment of all data that are important for an organization.

Most Data Governance projects aim to standardize the definition of data by the various company functions, to establish common access and use rules and to identify the subjects involved by defining their responsibilities. Therefore, Data Governance cannot be confined to a technology alone, but to a set of strategies, processes and rules to be defined upstream of data use, in order to exercise control over business processes and methods to prevent errors and to suggest actions needed to solve problems created by poor quality data.

The first advantage of Data Governance is, evidently, to allow the so-called ‘knowledge workers’ to access and share information provided by different applications and databases and to be able to count on quality data. But effective data governance and control also has important security effects, reducing the risks arising from operations and possible non-compliance with laws and regulations.

A Data Governance system is structured on three levels. At the lowest level are the technological tools for Etl and Data Quality. The activities at this level concern the IT function, supported, however, by business managers, and are aimed at ensuring data quality. The relevant rules must be collected and compared and any overlaps, gaps and inconsistencies must be remedied. At the intermediate level there are functions for monitoring the Data Quality rules and regulatory compliance models. Finally, at the upper level, there are the functions for the management and evaluation of data quality control processes, to control deviations from the established parameters. Here the roles and responsibilities of the operators must be defined, as well as the action plans for error correction, with definition of timing and intervention methods.
